Primary Information
This mineral, formerly known as “Haematite,” wasn’t discovered until 1773, when Jean Baptiste Rome de I’Isle dropped the first “e” and renamed it “Hematite.” Because of the red color the mineral turns when ground to powder, it gets its name from the Greek word “haima,” which means “blood.” Hematite is a unique material that is thought to have been used by man 164,000 years ago.
