Smoky Quartz is Scotland’s national gem, and the country has the stone’s oldest history with it. The Celts, who first settled the British Isles circa 300 B.C., mined brownish-gray Quartz in the Scottish highlands’ Cairngorm Mountains, naming the dark brown to black crystals Morion and the yellow-brown to grayish-brown crystals Cairngorm after the mountains where they were found.
These stones later became popular Highlander jewelry, shoulder brooches, and kilt pins, as well as power stones on the handles of weapons, particularly the Scottish dagger sgian dubh, a “sock knife” that is still part of a formal kilted dress uniform. J. S. Dana introduced the word “Smoky Quartz” to the gem world in 1837, and it was named from its color, which was compared to smoke.
