The word helios comes from the Greek words helios, which means “sun,” and trepein, which means “to attract.” Heliotrope was given the name “sun-turning” because tales claimed that when it was placed in the rays of the setting sun or immersed in water, it transformed the sun’s reflection blood-red.

The most well-known tale about this stone dates back to the Middle Ages and claims that the “Blood Stone” was produced when the blood of Jesus Christ’s wounds dripped upon the dark green ground and turned to stone after his crucifixion.

According to another legend, the blood of Christ, which streamed from the fatal spear-thrust, dropped over a Green Jasper lying at the foot of the Cross, and the Bloodstone variety of Jasper arose from it.
