Mookaite only emerges near Mooka Creek, the location for which it is named, can be found in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. The Aboriginal title “Mooka” alludes to the numerous springs that feed into this area and means “running waters.” The skeletal remains of radiolaria, minute protozoa with a hard silica shell, were accumulated as silt in shallow parts of sea beds over during the Cretaceous Period (145-66 million years ago), resulting in Mookaite. As the waves receded, additional silica transported in groundwater, coupled with minerals, consolidated the remains, resulting in the stunning color combinations of red, burgundy, mustard-yellow, cream, white, brown, mauve, and purple.
